On Saturday after the homecoming football game, the Viking volleyball team competed against Dakota State University. This was the going to be the deciding match between the two teams, as each team won in five sets earlier this season. During her pre-game speech Coach Kolbow said, 'May the best team win!' The Vikings came out on fire Saturday evening beating the Trojans 25-8. The momentum did not stop there, they followed the first set with two more victories 25-18, 25-23. The Vikings offense was unstoppable, with five hitters hitting above .290. Freshmen right side hitter Kaitlyn Heuring and sophomore middle hitter Aurissa Martens had 6 kills each, senior middle hitter KaDee Melby racked up 11, junior outside hitter Jill Noeske added 12, and leading the pack was senior outside hitter Bekah DePesa with 14 kills on the night. According to Kolbow, 'Anna did a great job of spreading the ball around and feeding the hot hitter at the right time.' Helping out the offense was the Viking serve receive, 'offense would not have been so successful without the phenomenal passes they were getting.' Adds Coach Kolbow.
The Vikings had another tough match on Sunday when they faced Dakota Wesleyan University, as the Tigers beat the Vikings in four sets at the Corn Palace Classic in Mitchell, SD in early September. As in past tradition between the two teams the game scores were very close. This time the Vikings were able to come out on top, winning the match in three sets 25-19, 25-22, 25-23. 'There was nothing flashy about this match, the team just played well together' says Coach Kolbow. The Vikings are playing extremely well at home. They are hoping to take that momentum with them on the road as they travel back to Mayville, ND for the conference crossover weekend. Friday October 7th the Vikings with take on the Jimmies of Jamestown College at 5:30 pm. Then on Saturday they will gear up for Dickinson State University at 2:00 pm and prepare for a much needed rematch against host school Mayville State University at 6:00 pm.
