In day two of the Unaffiliated-A.I.I./Frontier National Qualifying Softball Tournament, the Valley City State University Vikings won their first elimination game 17-6 over Mayville State University, before losing their second elimination game of the day to the University of Great Falls 6-3.
Game one seemed it would set up for a dramatic ending as both teams battled to a 6-6 tie through three and a half innings, before the Vikings set 15 hitters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, plating 11 runs in all to take control of the mercy shortened game.
All but two Viking hitters collected two hits each en route to 14 in the game. Hilary Kulczewski, Savannah McMillin and Courtney Shadlock all collected four RBI each with three of Kulczewski’s four coming on a three run homer in the fourth.
The Vikings also swiped seven stolen bases in the game.
Samantha Nalley gave up five earned runs in five innings of work, walking one and striking out three to pick up the win.
In game two, the University of Great Falls kept the Viking offense at bay to score a 6-3 win and end Valley City State’s season.
Valley City State threatened many times early in the game, leaving the bases loaded twice in the first five innings and stranded 11 runners in the game in the loss. The Vikings eventually sent the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh before a game ending ground ball double play eliminated any more threats from VCSU.
Adrianna Boychuk finished her career with a bang, hitting three for four and knocking in two runs, while McMillin and Brittany Lehner added two hits each. The Argos outhit the Vikings 10-9 in the contest.
Nalley, who threw every inning of the Vikings four games in the tournament gave up four earned runs, walking two and striking out six.
The Vikings finish the season at 10-26 on the season.
