The Valley City State University Viking Softball team will open the Unaffiliated-A.I.I./Frontier National Qualifying Tournament on Friday morning as the #4 seed in the field and play #5 seed Dakota State University at 10:00 am in Dickinson, ND.

The Vikings finished the regular season with an overall record of 7-24 and swept the Lady T’s in a road doubleheader in early April in the only season match-up between the two teams. Valley City State beat Dakota State (16-16) 12-0 in game one before winning the night cap 7-5 in 10 inning affair.

Valley City State started the season slow but has started to come on at the right time, winning five of their last eight regular season games.

Over that time period, junior Liz Hall-Sewell has been the driving force behind the offense in the Designated Player spot, hitting for a .500 average with two doubles, four runs scored and four RBI. The Boychuk sisters, Katarina and Adrianna, have also helped with the offense, hitting .474 and .455 respectively and swiping a combined 18 bases and scoring thirteen runs between the two of them.

In the circle, Samantha Nalley leads the Viking pitching staff and has averaged almost a strike out per inning in the last two weeks of the season, sitting down 38 hitters in 39 innings of work. Nalley has been the winner of all five games over that eight game stretch.

The winner of the Vikings versus Dakota State game will face the number one seed and tournament host Dickinson State.

Other first found action will see the #3 seed University of Great Falls versus #6 seed Mayville State University with the winner of that game playing #2 Jamestown College.
