The Valley City State University gave two ranked teams all they could handle their fourth day in Arizona, losing 1-0 to #2 ranked Lubbock Christian (TX) before losing another nail-biter 6-5 to #23 Bethel College (KS).

In game one, the Vikings used solid defense to keep the second ranked Chaps of Lubbock Christian within reach, putting the tying run on second base in the top of the seventh before being retired to close the game.

Lubbock Christian scored the only run of the game on a throwing error in the fourth to third base.

Valley City State could only muster two hits versus one of the nation's top teams with Katarina Boychuk and Hayley Bevan collecting a single each. In the top of the seventh, Taylor Schroeder reached on an error with one out and pinch runner Mack Hamre was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Adrianna Boychuk before Hilary Kulczewski flew out to then the game.

Sam Nalley, the Viking starter, scattered six hits over seven innings, striking out four while walking three. Nalley yielded no earned runs in the game.

The Vikings started and finished strong in game two, scoring two in the home half of the first before mounting a three run rally in the bottom of the seventh that fell one run short in the 6-5 loss.

Courtney Shadlock and Taylor Schroeder scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the first to put the Vikings ahead 2-0 before Bethel tied the game in the top of the second. A four run top of the fourth would prove to be the difference in the game.

VCSU scored three in the bottom of the seventh with the first coming from the Boychuk sister tandem, with Adrianna knocking in younger sister Katarina with an RBI single. That was followed by a Taylor Schroeder double with a Hilary Kulczewski single plating the elder Boychuk and Schroeder. Bethel induced an infield pop-up to end the Viking rally and leave them short of their victory.

Starter Torri Fenton yielded three earned runs in just over five innings of work being tagged with the loss.

The VCSU offense was led by three Vikings collected two hits each. Courtney Shadlock, Taylor Schroeder and Hilary Kulczewski led the Viking offense. Schroeder scored two runs while Kulczewski collected two RBI.

The Vikings are back in action on Wednesday when they play Missouri Valley College and have a rematch with Purdue University-North Centeral.
