It was a tough opening day for the VCSU Viking Softball team, losing both games on the day both to NCAA Division II programs, Bemidji State 6-2 and St Cloud State 9-4.

The Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead versus Bemidji State in the opener before the Beavers scored six unanswered to pull out the victory. Bemidji State responded with two in the top of the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth. Four of the six Beaver runs were unearned helped by four Viking defensive miscues.

Samantha Nalley threw well in the loss, striking out eight while walking none.
In the nightcap, the host team St. Cloud State jumped out early to a 5-1 lead after the first and never looked back. The Huskies tacked on one more in the second and fourth and added two more in the sixth.

Valley City State scored the opening run of the game on aggressive base running by Shayna Taffinder and Courtney Shadlock and a wild throw by the Husky first baseman. Hilary Kulczewski hit her first home run of the season in the sixth, a two run shot to pull the Vikings to 7-3 before Hayley Bevan scored the final run in the top of the seventh on a Taylor Schroeder groundout.

Offensively the Vikings were led on the day by Courtney Shadlock who hit four for seven on the day (.571) and scored two runs.
