SB: Viking Softball Adds California Corner Stand Out

Feb. 08, 2013 10:32 AM | Author: Viking Sports Info (Kurt Ludwigsen contributor)

Viking Softball head coach Chad Slyter announces the signing of Rochelle Schulze to a letter of intent to play softball at Valley City State University beginning in the fall of 2013.

Schulze, a six year member of the Nor Cal Assault, is the oldest tenured player with the most number of years at the 18U level in program history. As an 8th grader, she announced her presence with the Assault by hitting a home run in her first 18U tournament at the Batbuster's Surf City Showcase in Southern California in the fall of 2008.

Since that time Schulze has played in tournaments from coast to coast including tournaments in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado and Utah including major showcases in Florida and California. She also played in a showcase in Arizona including practicing at the University of Arizona and a visit from US Olympic and Head Coach at U of A, Mike Candrea.

Over her playing career, Rochelle has raised her batting average and slugging percentage every season culminating with a .468 batting average and team highs in extra base hits, home runs and RBI's. Not to be overshadowed is her defensive ability, Schulze committed only two errors in 159 chances this past season while anchoring the hot corner for the Nor Cal club. In her high school career, she has been a staple at third base since her freshman season, earning All-League honors as a junior.

Rochelle is the oldest of three sisters that are all active in athletics. As successful as she is on the field, Schulze remains humble and active off the field, donating food to shelters, helping run softball clinics in the surrounding cities and has spent time volunteering in the Junior League.

Rochelle has a passion for art and spending many hours drawing and during the summer she enjoys spending time with friends and family, camping and wake boarding.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Rochelle is the kind of player that will come in and contribute right away,' commented Slyter. 'We have been fortunate to have Coach Ludwigsen send us a number of his players and they have done well at both Valley City State and in our softball program. Rochelle is the latest great fit for us. She has played all across the country against and with a high level of talent and she'll bring that experience, confidence and playing ability with her to VCSU and we couldn't be more excited.'

Schulze has played alongside players who have gone on to colleges and universities such as University of Texas El Paso, Stanford, Cal State Fullerton and Delaware State and has shared the same infield with current Valley City State first baseman Hilary Kulczewski. She follows four former Nor Cal Assault and players coached by Assault coach Kurt Ludwigsen to the state of North Dakota to continue her education and softball career.
