The Valley City State University Viking Softball Team ran in the annual fall Fargo Mini-Marathon on Saturday, October 20th.
On a challenge from the coaching staff the Vikings chose to run either the 5K, 10K or Half Marathon as a part of the Fargo Mini-Marathon held each fall in Fargo, ND.
The Vikings rose to the challenge, conditioning on their own outside of the fall practices and the regular stength and conditioning program that they have in the off season.
Running the 5K race was Mackenzie Hamre, Caitlin Giesbrecht, Sam Nalley, Katie Langdon. Choosing the 10K run were Taylor Schroeder, Hilary Kulczewski, Savannah McMillin, Stephanie Lahey, Katarina Boychuk, Shayna Taffinder, Cejay Hilhorst, Torri Fenton, Courtney Shadlock and Hayley Bevan. Adrianna Boychuk represented the Vikings in the Half Marathon race.
"I was proud that the team not only accepted the challenge but that they rose to the occasion and really enjoyed the run and the experience of it," said Head Coach Chad Slyter.
Courtney Shadlock, a junior for the Vikings summed it up saying "It was a great experience. We were somewhat skepitcal at first and didn't really know what to expect, but once we got there, ran with all the other runners in the races it was a good experience. When you crossed the finish line we really had a sense of accomplishment. I would definitely do it again."
