SB: Kulczewski, Shadlock Salvage a Viking Split

After dropping a pitchers dual to open the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, Valley City State rallied in game two to earn a split on their first day in Florida.

Senior Katie McBride took the tough luck loss in game one, throwing a one hitter and giving up no earned runs in the loss. Two Viking errors in the bottom half of the third gave Indiana Wesleyan two runs in the inning and that was all the scoring the game would see.

McBride struck out ten and walked only one in her six innings of work but the Viking offense was stagnant, only collecting two hits in the game, a first inning two out single by Cyndi Figol and a drag bunt by Jen Shadlock. The Vikings did not advance a runner past second base.

In game two, the Viking bats woke up to score a 6-3 victory over Marian College, led by junior Hilary Kulczewski. Valley City State pounded out eleven hits, with four players collecting two hits a piece to plate six runs. Kulczewski collected her first hit of the season, a three run home run to spot the Vikings to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third, then followed that with a two run shot in the home half of the fifth to push the score to 6-0.

Along with Kulczewski, Shadlock, Jane Petti and Caitlin Giesbrecht each collected two hits.

Shadlock picked up the win for the Vikings, inducing nine ground ball outs and allowing only two earned runs in six innings of work, striking out two and walking one. McBride came on to pitch the seventh to pick up the save for the Vikings.

Marian College received votes for the pre-season NAIA National Poll in November, finishing four spots out of the top 25 poll.

With the split, Valley City State moves to 2-3 on the season and plays two more on Friday facing off with Marian College (IN) at 1:00 PM before finishing the day with Point Park University (PA) at 3:00 PM.
