Valley City State and Mayville State collide Saturday in Mayville for the 67th meeting between the two football programs.
The Vikings lead the all-time series with Mayville 52-14 and have not lost to the Comets since 1998, a stretch of 16 consecutive Viking victories. Kickoff Saturday is set for 2 p.m. in Mayville.
The No. 16-ranked Vikings are 4-1 this season and 2-0 in North Star play. Their only loss has come at No. 1-ranked Morningside College. VCSU is coming off a 31-17 win over Presentation College last Saturday. The Vikings trailed 17-10 late in the third quarter, but rallied to score the final 21 points for the victory.
Mayville State is 3-3 so far this season, with wins over Haskell University, Cole College and Macalester College. The Vikings and Comets have played one common opponent so far. VCSU defeated Jamestown 31-14 while Mayville lost to Jamestown 21-19.
The Comets have been lead offensively this season by running back Jerril Jenkins, who is averaging 4.8 yards per carry and has six touchdowns.
Valley City State moved up two spots in this week's NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, and are now ranked No. 16, their highest ranking of the season. Following Saturday's game at Mayville, Valley City State will play three straight home games beginning Oct. 19 with a 1 p.m. kickoff against Gustavus Adolphus.
The Viking offense is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA in pass efficiency (169.4), No. 6 in total points (219) and No. 7 in points per game (43.8). The Viking defense is ranked No. 9 in pass defense per game (157.2). Also on the defensive side, Dwanye Fearon is ranked No.5 in sacks per game (1.1) and No. 8 in total sacks (5.5).
Offensively, running back Derek Elliott is Top 2 in the nation in several categories. He is No. 1 in all purpose yards (1081), all purpose yards per game (216.2) and scoring per game (16.2). He is also No. 2 in total rushing yards (849), rushing yards per game (169.8) and total touchdowns (13).
VCSU quarterback Kurtis Walls ranks No. 5 in the NAIA in pass efficient (165.5).
