The Valley City State men's basketball season ended Saturday in the semifinals of the North Star Athletic Association postseason tournament.
The No. 3 seed Vikings lost 74-56 at No. 2 seed Dakota State in Saturday's semifinals.
The Vikings struggled to shoot the ball in Madison, S.D., making 33 percent overall (23-69) and 13 percent on 3's (3-23). Senior Aaron Duske led the Vikings with 16 points in his final college basketball game. Mac Kroeplin and AJ McDonald each scored 11 and Quin Peterson added 10 points off the bench.
Early on, it was looking good for the Vikings as they built a 14-4 lead early in the first half behind seven quick points from Duske. Dakota State responded with an 18-4 run to take the lead for good at 22-18. Dylan Hale nailed a 3 to cap off the run, one of his seven 3's on the night.
Dakota State led 37-30 at the half, and opened the second half on a 9-2 run for a 46-32 lead. The Vikings could not get within single-digits the rest of the game.
Hale knocked down seven 3's and and finished with 27 points to lead Dakota State. Yusuf Vinson added 14 points.
Valley City State ends the season with a 14-14 record after returning just four players from last year's National Tournament team. Duske is the only senior on the roster.
Dakota State advances to play top seed Jamestown in the NSAA Championship on Monday in Jamestown.
