The Valley City State men's cross country team took third place at the Randy Smith Invitational held Friday Sept. 13 in Moorhead, Minn. The Vikings finished ahead of North Star rival the University of Jamestown, and the Viking Harriers also edged out Minot State University, an NCAA Division II school and former Dakota Athletic Conference rival.

MSU-Moorhead won the meet, followed by University of Mary and VCSU.

Both the men’s and women’s teams had a number of personal records set over the 8 km and 5 km course, respectively. Richard Langdeaux led the Viking men for the third week in a row with a 13th-place finish with a personal record time of 26:37.

Senior and Valley City native Wayne Engelhard finished with a time of 27:25 to take 27th by lowering his previous best time by 50 seconds. Senior Richard Wright from Starkweather, N.D., finished 30th with a time of 27:36. Sophomore Malik Jackson (Las Vegas, Nev.) took 36th in 28:07. Freshman Austin Albrecht (West Fargo, N.D.) placed 39th with a time of 28:24 and freshman Alex Askerooth (Cayuga, N.D.) was 54th in 30:24. Jackson, Albrecht and Askerooth all established new personal records for the 8km race.

The Vikings also had three women's runners compete in the 5k event. Junior College transfer from Sacramento, Calif., Monica Madavi, led VCSU with a time of 20:47 to finish 38th. Freshman Alexandra Cardenas (Newark, Calif.) came in 50th with a 21:24 over the 5000m course.

Both the men and women have this weekend off from racing but will be returning to action in the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday, Sept. 28.
