Casey
Olney
Head Baseball Coach
Casey Olney enters his fifth season at VCSU and third season as Head Coach. Olney joined the Vikings staff in the fall of 2005 serving as hitting coach, recruiting coordinator, and strength / conditioning coach. In 2007 he became the 8th head baseball coach in VCSU’s history.
Olney, 33, is a native of Flaxton, ND. He attended Cibola H.S. in Yuma, AZ, and graduated from Central College (IA) in 2004 with a BA in business education. He finished his post secondary education with a 4.0 GPA while earning a master’s degree in Sports Pedagogy from NDSU in 2009.
During his playing career Olney was voted a team captain at Central College in 2004 and received the Central baseball team’s Versteeg Award for outstanding leadership and sportsmanship. Following his senior season at Central he stayed on with the Dutch as the Head Junior Varsity and Catchers Coach and was an Assistant Coach for Pella (IA) High School in the summer of 2005.
Olney gained his first head coaching experience in Bowbells (ND) with the American Legion program. He also coached youth baseball at the Babe Ruth League level. His 2004 Bismarck (ND) Babe Ruth squad won championships at the District, State, and Midwest Plains levels before capturing 3rd place at the Babe Ruth World Series in Van Buren Arkansas.
Coach Olney has also been active in amateur baseball. From 1995-1997 he played with the Sherwood (ND) Yankee’s helping them to a Saskota league championship in 1997. In 2007 he was a member of the class AA state champion Enderlin Indies. Olney also helped Valley City found and organize two new amateur baseball teams in 2009, the Saints and Bombers. He played for and managed the Saints who participated in the AAA division for the first time.
Coach Olney is a board member of the Valley City Baseball Association, The Valley City Amateur Baseball Association, and is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association.

Sam Bjorling
Assistant Baseball Coach
Sam Bjorling is in his third season as Hitting Coach and Recruiting Coordinator at VCSU. A graduate of The University of Iowa, Coach Bjorling joins the Viking staff after a successful stay at Iowa City High where he served as the Head Freshman Coach and Assistant Varsity Coach. In addition, Bjorling was also the Head Coach of the Johnson County American Legion program.
While at Johnson County coach Bjorling led the Johnnies to back-to-back state championships in 2005 and 2006. Bjorling left Johnson County with an overall record of 70-29 in three seasons.
The last two summers Bjorling has been the Head Coach of the Valley City American Legion program. During both seasons the team has enjoyed tremendous success, finishing as the Section 7 runner-up in 2008 and the Section 7 champions in 2009.
Prior to transferring to the University of Iowa he attended The University of Dubuque for two seasons and played left field for the Spartans. As a high school Junior Bjorling was a member of the 2-A state champions at St. Albert High in Council Bluffs.
